Trekking and Hiking in the Wonderland of Munduk

Puri Lumbung Cottages Environmental Trekking Center – Munduk Village, Northen Bali. Designed in 1992, by : Nyoman Bagiarta

We have designed more than 10 trekking routes to explore the beauty and history of Munduk Village. You could start the experience by choosing the easy trek called Red Coral Waterfall, where you can  observe the coffee, cloves, vanilla and any other kind of plantation areas or try the most challenging trek,  the Dutch Colonial trek which ends at Tamblingan Lake.

Some of the trekking route is long enough, we can provide the lunch box on request that you can enjoy at the some of nice spot during the trekking. As a part of our endeavor to preserve the environment we wish to limit the use of plastic packaging. In addition, you will pass through many temples and holy areas it is advisable to bring incense and flowers for offering.

Red Coral “Tanah Barak” Waterfall Trek :

Start from Puri Lumbung Cottages on a soothing walk to observe the coffee, clove, vanilla, avocado, and other plantation gardens. Then, refresh yourself at Red Coral Waterfall. Go back to Puri Lumbung Cottages via a different route where you will have the opportunity to see spice gardens and farming in action.

Loop Trek Containing A Number Of Waterfalls :

Start your trek from Puri Lumbung cottages, walk along the riverbank, finally arriving at Red Coral Waterfall. Continue this energizing trek to arrive at stunning and soothing Laangan Waterfall, the highest waterfall in Bali. Afterwards, return to Puri Lumbung Cottages via a different path with home and spice gardens on the way.

  • Degree          :  Moderate, somewhat steep. Please note that there are 350 concrete steps on the way to reach Laangan Waterfall

Treks Combining Views of Waterfalls and Rice Fields 

From Puri Lumbung Cottages, head to the Red Coral Waterfall walking along the riverbank. Still in Munduk, continue to Dayang Rice Terrace area, home to a breathtaking concentration of terraced paddy fields. Return to Puri Lumbung Cottages, and on the way you will have the option to visit a Dutch Colonial style house.

Inter Village Trek 

Walk from Puri Lumbung Cottages to Gesing Village where you will encounter one of nature’s many splendors:  the giant Banyan tree. Centuries old, this sacred tree is the largest Banyan in Bali. After, head to Bolangan, Gesing’s neighboring village, to witness the spectacular landscape carved by layers of rice terraces.

Stone Water Spring Trek 

Start from Puri Lumbung Cottages, walk to historic Batumejajah settlement. Legend tells that Munduk’s settlers came from the royal familly in Sourthen Bali via Tamblingan. As ant invasion forced settlers to flee to Munduk.

Refresh yourself with the natural spring water flowing from Batumejajah’s clifff stones. Return to Puri Lumbung Cottages via a different route. Pass through coffee, clove and vanilla plantation and rice terraces, as well as settlements along the way.

Dutch Colonial Trek 

Start from Puri Lumbung Cottages to Pesanggrahan – the first guest house in Bali built arround 1906 by Dutch colonials, then proceed to a number of villages and settlements, rice terraces, coffee and clove plantations. This trek and at Tamblingan Lake where you will be transferred by car to Puri Lumbung Cottages, if you request it. Alternatively, take a different way back by hiking to Munduk Village.

Subak Trek 

Traditional water distribution system are known in Bali as Subak. Strt from Puri Lumbung Cottages to visit Subak Suradadi and then walk through a number of local spices gardens to finally reach Dayang Rice Field . From there you can walk and explore other Subak, which include a traditional tunnel and public bath. this is an easy trek through rice field terraces and along small riverbanks.

Mendaum Riverside Trek 

Starting from Puri Lumbung Cottages, drive to the location of Mundukan Tingkih settlement’s water source. This is a sacred area where local villagers can perform religious blessing and cleansing rituals, called Melukat. Following the river’s course, end at Laangan Waterfall for a cooling break, then head back to Puri Lumbung Cottages.

Historical Trek 

Follow the route of the ancient Majapahit expeditions, visiting ruins and other historically important site. The expedition ends at Tamblingan Temple where you will be transferred by car to Puri Lumbung Cottages.

Balinese Patriots Long March Trek 

Through mountain posts, follow the path of the Balinese patriots who resisted the Dutch during 1945 – 1950. It covers a number of traditional settlements and plantations stopping at Emped settlement in Gesing Village, at the oldest and biggest Banyan tree in Bali. And then eturn to Puri Lumbung Cottages.

Inter Lake Trek 

Starting from Puri Lumbung Cottages, drive to Buyan Lake, one of the famous twin lakes Buyan – Tamblingan. You will pass Dasong, area of vegetables and strawberry farming center, continue to walk through the tropical rain forest (called hutan Dasong) then you will find the Telaga Aya – the little canal which almost connecting Lake Buyan and Tamblingan. The walk will continued to visit several temples, such as : Dalem Tamblingan Temple – to see the natural heritage from the Stone Age, and Gubug Temple – the Vishnu shrine. Once there, you may rent a traditional canoe to go around the Tamblingan Lake for leisure if you wish. The trek will end by return to Puri Lumbung Cottages by car or walk back through other trek, depend on your request.

Tamblingan Lake Temple Trek 

Starting from Puri Lumbung Cottages to Gemulak area by car, then visit a series of old temples around the lake and hike to Sang Hyang Kangin Temple where the driver will be waiting to take you to Puri Lumbung Cottages.
